SHORT BLOG #2 – A Bit of History

I found the picture above on the Toronto archive site (I’ll leave the exact link below). This picture peaked my interest, because, moving to Toronto, the Yonge-Dundas Square Cineplex was the first movie theatre I went to. The picture above is of the theatre at Yonge-Dundas Square in 1972. It’s crazy to see how much the area has changed in under five decades. It makes you wonder how much more change is going to take place to this area during our life time. Till my next post!

SHORT BLOG #1 – Nice to meet you:)

Hey! My name is Andrea Kuntjoro, I’m 18 years old (19 real soon..), and I’m a first year student at the University of Toronto studying under the faculty of Arts & Science. I was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and have lived there my whole life until moving here!

Growing up, Toronto has always appealed to me. It was our country’s version of “New York”; it was a place that seemed flourishing with opportunities for the individuals who called Toronto home, as well as a place that seemed so full of diversity in terms of people & culture. Coming here, I was able to see these expectations come to life. Toronto is such a beautiful city.

However, there’s still so much more of the city to explore and learn about. The fraction of the city I’ve seen for myself is minuscule in comparison to the things I have yet to discover. Furthermore, I find the concept of social justice fascinating, because there are so many different ways to approach problems relating to equity within society, depending on your own core beliefs. Core beliefs are determined by the environment you’ve grown up in, in terms of people, places, etc. This of course, is different for everyone, which is why there are so many varying perspectives that can be heard when discussing this topic. For these reasons, I joined INI101. I believe this class will help me uncover new things about this city I now call home.

During our first class, we went around the room brainstorming problems we each had faced recently. One of our peers shared an experience where she was squawked at on the street for no apparent reason. This sheds light on the mental health issues that exist within our city, a signifiant problem that I believe needs to be addressed more pressingly.

Anyway, nice to meet you. I’ll see you in my next post!
